Xander was supposed to be the gay character and Spike was supposed to be his dirty little secret in the basement. They were supposed to have endless hate sex and hide it from everybody because they were ashamed of each other. However, Seth Green left the show and the writers decided to make Willow gay. Joss loved the endless hate sex storyline so much he saved it for Spike/Buffy in S6.

029: Willow was supposed to have a psychic dog named Miss Cleo, after the famous American medium, who would help the Scoobies sniff out vampires and demons as well as get visions from The Powers That Be. Fox nixed the idea since it was too similar to one being done on Ally McBeal. The concept was later rewritten as "Doyle"
