Xander was supposed to be the gay character and Spike was supposed to be his dirty little secret in the basement. They were supposed to have endless hate sex and hide it from everybody because they were ashamed of each other. However, Seth Green left the show and the writers decided to make Willow gay. Joss loved the endless hate sex storyline so much he saved it for Spike/Buffy in S6.

001. The original script for “The Girl in Question” showed Spike and Angel’s flight home from Rome. They drank excessively, complained some more, and eventually kissed, followed by a fade to black. The network made the writers take this out.

After the battle in Not Fade Away, Spike and Buffy reunited and became a couple.

Fox nixed the idea since it was too similar to one being done on Ally McBeal. The concept was later rewritten as “Doyle”
